About Capstone Design
Capstone Design is a project-based course designed as the culmination of student learning in the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Udayana University. Through this course, final-year students are challenged to design and solve real-world engineering problems comprehensively and in a multidisciplinary manner, by integrating the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies.
Capstone Design plays a key role in the implementation of the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum and contributes to achieving the Graduate Learning Outcomes (CPL) as required by LAM TEKNIK standards.
Objectives of Capstone Design
- To develop students' abilities to solve engineering problems systematically and creatively.
- To encourage teamwork, effective communication, and project management.
- To integrate technical, economic, environmental, and ethical aspects into the engineering design process.
- To foster professional responsibility and awareness of the social impact of engineering practices.
Structure and Implementation
- Implementation Semester: Semester VII–VIII
- Format: Group project (2–4 students per team)
- Duration: 1–2 semesters (depending on the curriculum structure)
- Supervisor: At least one academic advisor from a relevant field
- Assessment: Proposal, final report, prototype (if any), and final presentation
Capstone Project Stages
- Problem Identification: Literature review and field survey to determine the engineering problem.
- Planning and Proposal: Preparing a technical design proposal and work plan.
- Design and Analysis: Developing engineering solutions through modeling or simulation.
- Implementation / Prototype Development: (optional) Prototyping and testing.
- Evaluation and Final Report: Compiling the report and final presentation.
Learning Outcomes (CPL)
- Able to design systems, components, or engineering processes to meet desired needs.
- Able to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Able to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering in problem-solving.
- Able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Able to consider ethical, social, economic, and environmental aspects in engineering design.
