Capstone design

About Capstone Design

Capstone Design is a project-based course designed as the culmination of student learning in the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Udayana University. Through this course, final-year students are challenged to design and solve real-world engineering problems comprehensively and in a multidisciplinary manner, by integrating the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies.

Capstone Design plays a key role in the implementation of the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum and contributes to achieving the Graduate Learning Outcomes (CPL) as required by LAM TEKNIK standards.

Objectives of Capstone Design

  • To develop students' abilities to solve engineering problems systematically and creatively.
  • To encourage teamwork, effective communication, and project management.
  • To integrate technical, economic, environmental, and ethical aspects into the engineering design process.
  • To foster professional responsibility and awareness of the social impact of engineering practices.

Structure and Implementation

  • Implementation Semester: Semester VII–VIII
  • Format: Group project (2–4 students per team)
  • Duration: 1–2 semesters (depending on the curriculum structure)
  • Supervisor: At least one academic advisor from a relevant field
  • Assessment: Proposal, final report, prototype (if any), and final presentation

Capstone Project Stages

  1. Problem Identification: Literature review and field survey to determine the engineering problem.
  2. Planning and Proposal: Preparing a technical design proposal and work plan.
  3. Design and Analysis: Developing engineering solutions through modeling or simulation.
  4. Implementation / Prototype Development: (optional) Prototyping and testing.
  5. Evaluation and Final Report: Compiling the report and final presentation.

Learning Outcomes (CPL)

  • Able to design systems, components, or engineering processes to meet desired needs.
  • Able to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Able to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering in problem-solving.
  • Able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Able to consider ethical, social, economic, and environmental aspects in engineering design.
