Teaching and Learning Processes
The teaching and learning activities in the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (BME) program are designed to achieve the program’s expected learning outcomes (ELOs). Each ELO is linked to a group of related courses. The BME program applies a combination of conventional learning and student-centered learning (SCL) methods.
In conventional learning, lecturers deliver course material in class, followed by discussions, Q&A sessions, homework, and various assessments such as assignments, individual or group presentations, reports, and quizzes.
In student-centered learning (SCL), students take a more active role in their education. They may receive assignments before the lecture, study independently using lecturer-provided references, and present their findings in class. SCL also includes activities such as paper reviews, industrial visits, field studies in home industries, and community service projects.
One credit in BME represents approximately 50 minutes of classroom activity, 60 minutes of independent study, and 60 minutes for structured assignments or 170 minutes for practice activity. Both conventional and SCL methods ensure students engage in independent and structured learning.
Typically, conventional learning is used for general subjects, basic sciences, and engineering sciences, usually up to the 5th semester. Student-centered learning is applied to core mechanical engineering courses, elective courses, and some early subjects that benefit from active learning, such as machine element design, research methods, entrepreneurship, and community service. The teaching method for each course is outlined in the Semester Learning Plan (SLP).
BME emphasizes active student involvement to achieve the ELOs. Students are made aware of the expected outcomes through class banners, course outlines, and detailed SLPs, encouraging them to understand and interpret the material rather than passively following lectures.
Learning in BME is conducted through blended learning, combining face-to-face sessions and online meetings. The learning management system, OASE, significantly supports this approach. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all courses were conducted online.
